WOODCUT ORIGINS
Inspired by the ancient Japanese woodcut block method of printing. The oldest form of printmaking, woodcut is a relief process in which knives and other tools are used to carve a design into the surface of a wooden block. The raised areas that remain after the block has been cut are inked and printed, while the recessed areas that are cut away do not retain ink, and will remain blank in the final print.
The use of mythical beasts with overexaggerated features and stance was a unique style that is copied centuries later in modern art and anime cartoons. This Japanese inspired Red Oxx is a force to be reconned with.
Woodcuts played an important role in the history of Japanese art. During the 17th century, a style of genre art called ukiyo-e gained prominence in Japan. Woodcuts served as a convenient and practical way of filling the large demand for inexpensive ukiyo-e pictures. The creation of the ukiyo-e woodcut is attributed to Hishikawa Moronobu (c. 1618–c. 1694), whose designs for illustrations of popular literature were immediately successful. A special branch of ukiyo-e was the making of miniature prints, called suri-mono, to commemorate special occasions. They usually carried a poem and were made on special paper decorated with gold or silver dust. In the 18th century, ukiyo-e culminated in the landscape prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
